Route A/B—Session 14, part 4: Enlil, You...

Now that I finished route C, I find I'm able to access the 1.0 ending of route A, while checking for additional scenes. So I explore the possibilities there. I also start on additional scenes for route B.

Apologies for the Sakuya thing here. I recorded the "leave Sakuya" scene separately and then put it in the wrong place. It should have been at the start of the video, but instead I put it before the bad ending scene when she is present. Well, hopefully it's not too confusing.

the soul separated from time

What the hell, Enlil? I knew you were ruthless, but it seems you're even worse than that. A cruel, inhuman monster. Killing someone just because she wouldn't go along with your plans?! (And what are Enlil's plans, anyway? She's pretty tight-lipped about them.)

This helicopter... I wonder who's in it. I recall that when Criminal was rescuing Nabu and company, he directed them to a heliport. Although the face-off with Enlil takes place on the Kyouka Academy roof, did the helicopter fly over there after leaving the eXarch building? The date in the two routes does match up: May 25. Therefore, it's reasonable to think they saved his life and replaced the damaged body parts with cyborg parts, and that's how he became HE. I'm thinking Mitsuhiko also gave him his Moon's Age for some reason. Or else Mitsuhiko didn't survive, and one of the others gave it to him to remember his father by?

Also, it seems the flash Hinata saw of Sakuya being threatened by Enlil's sword was of a bad ending! I'll have to keep that in mind.

Route D—Session 15, part 1: Revenge

HE fails to save the one he has been trying to save, and his rage destroys the world (apparently). He vows revenge on the one he believes responsible. He meets Ishtar, and starts to consider why there are gaps in his consciousness. Then, he finds himself in a firefight with Code (with details of both the fighting and the weapons described obsessively).

EMERGENCY

Hmm. So, this is saltwater, huh? Is he out at sea?

I think that "tabula rasa" cannot be correct. If it were, he couldn't possibly be having such thoughts. Or, for that matter, anything one would consider thoughts.

CIPHER

I couldn't help noticing an inconsistency here. In the picture of her in the pod, one can see that Mutsuki has no clothes. But in the pictures of HE holding her, she is clearly wearing similar clothes to him. No way would he have spent any time dressing her, even if clothes were available, considering the situation. Well, I suppose this is really because they didn't want to deal with problems of nudity, rather than because of any in-story issues.

FRIENDLY

"Bondage clothing"? Really? I'm not sure why he would immediately think that, unless it's because it's all leather or something. It's hard to tell what material that's supposed to be on a drawn character. It does also have a couple of belts and some zippers in odd places. It's some odd fashion, but I don't think it's much odder than anything else we've seen these characters wearing.

While we're talking about Ishtar, is this still Yumi? I guess it is her body, or something. Or it would be if this were the real world. But mentally, is that Yumi or Ishtar's Shadow? It could be the latter, seeing as Yumi carries her in route C. It also raises the question: if this is not Yumi that we are seeing from HE's perspective, then was the HE that we saw from Yumi's perspective the same as the one in this route? It's not that simple, though: although we are seeing mostly a different set of events (presumably because they are at different times), some things do overlap between the routes.

What was she about to say? And why did his hearing go haywire just at that moment? It's not just because of the imminent time jump, right?

SEARCH AND DESTROY

Aaand then we get a long scene with obsessive detail about weapons and fighting. Nothing much there that I want to analyze. Nevertheless...

Does copyright cover weapon design? I would think that's the domain of patents and trademarks.

Well, this is interesting. HE notices digital sparks coming out of people. He thinks this might be cyberspace. I'm reminded of a detail from route B. When Criminal was approaching the eXarch building, at one point they noticed sparks coming from the Code members. Maybe that was just damage to cyborg parts, or...

Route D—Session 15, part 2: Am I Real?

HE wakes up in the hotel room, with Ishtar close to him. She's trying to tell him what his purpose is, that he's going after the wrong person. He starts searching for information about Babylon, about eXarch, about Code and various other actors, before a certain creepy person shows up. She tries to convince him he's just a virtual entity who was never human to begin with.

FOX HOLE

"The person you're fighting right now isn't your real enemy. You're mistaking your true enemy for someone else." Okay, the first sentence isn't that surprising. Enlil may be a heartless... er, whatever insult you'd use on a very masculine woman... but we know she loved Mutsuki and wouldn't have done anything to deliberately harm her. Not to mention, she must have known what a critical role Mutsuki is playing, being hooked up to the Enigma system (although, I don't know very well what that entails). I didn't notice it until recently, but that must have been why the network went crazy when Mutsuki was pulled out of the pod. So, of course, Enlil wasn't the one who killed (will kill?) Mutsuki. Whoever did (will do?) it is either ignorant of the consequences or wants to cause havoc.

The second sentence, however, is very interesting. It could just be poorly worded, and actually mean pretty much the same as the first sentence. But assuming not, it implies that she knows who the true enemy is, but that HE thinks they're someone else. Well, let's consider the antagonists here. There's Enlil, but she already ruled out. There's Code (which Enlil commanded). They're a problem, but a lot of it seems to stem from HE completely failing to understand his situation (specifically, going backward in time): he fights them because they seem to be attacking him, but they also seem to be defending themselves (or at least, Babylon) from his attacks. And then there's eXarch. Could they be the "true enemy" in this case? And he's wearing one of their chronographs, and maybe some other things too. Maybe it's actually someone I'm forgetting about, or whom we haven't seen yet.

The real and the virtual merging into one, such that it is no longer possible to tell the difference... I don't know about you, but that sounds rather nightmarish to me. I think that humans, as a whole, need to maintain a strong sense of what is real, even if some individuals or groups don't. It could be very bad if we lose that, though I'll leave it up to you to imagine practical reasons for it.

Also, "confrontation will end"? I doubt that.

Okay, that has to be the most abrupt bad ending so far. It's like, "You're right, it looks like I'm not real after all", and then, BAM! He's gone. Well, pretty much. What, no struggle at all? No creeping doubts for even a few paragraphs? It's a surprising bit of writing from someone who rarely writes anything so concise, and as much as I'm enjoying this whole VN still, I just can't bring myself to believe this ending.

By the way, I'm reminded of something Magdalene said last route, about what happened with Shadow Nulls after whatever event that happened: specifically, that they had been given creativity at a particular moment. So, if Yumi was mistaken about Nulls being distinctly not human because of a lack of some trait that others can observe, could someone not also be mistaken about themselves for a similar reason?

Route D—Session 15, part 3: Status of Enlil

Yayoi visits the hotel room, revealing something outrageous about a certain medicine. Then, HE resumes his hunt for Enlil; along the way, inconsistencies reveal themselves.

DOCTOR

The mysterious eye pipes up again. Well, maybe "pipe" isn't the right word; I doubt its narration is supposed to have a physical voice. But anyway, HE feels its presence here. If we can assume that this really is Hinata, then it's not the first time this happened. In route A, he felt it back then, after the first time he and Sakuya had merged with their Shadows. Now he feels it again. Why only him? Why not Ishtar or Yumi?

So he really does speak... occasionally. I don't quite understand the way this route is written when it comes to the protagonist. Even though he almost never seems to speak, other people sometimes respond as if he is speaking. Maybe this is biocomputer communication? When he speaks, Ishtar is surprised. Although he assumes it's because he referred to Yayoi as "sensei", but I'm not so sure; maybe it was just because he spoke. Or maybe not.

Wow. So, the drugs that are supposed to be for saving lives are in fact also making cyborgs—especially biocomputer users—into drug addicts. And of course, eXarch, being the wonderfully virtuous corporation that it is, is deliberately taking advantage for profit. This seems to explain why so many arrested for drug abuse are ICs, as ICs would naturally make up a large proportion of biocomputer users. Even though the immunosuppresants are legal, the addicts might end up trying other drugs. Of course, that assumes the gateway hypothesis is correct, though there might be some other reason for a correlation.

JAM

At this point, HE checks the bio on Enlil. It states quite clearly that Enlil is female. I wonder if he notices this. It's not at all clear, because after this point, the narration strictly avoids referring to Enlil with a pronoun, or anything else that implies a gender.

Most of this cluster is pretty much HE grappling with the inconsistencies that we already know stem from his moving backward in time. There's not much for me to say at this point that I haven't already said regarding route C.

For the question, "Then did he [the one acting when I'm not conscious] kill Enlil?" I answered, "That's impossible." I'm not sure what effect this has. Maybe the wrong answer is another instant bad ending, but I don't know.

HE helps some more people in cyberspace. Then he puts out a call for assistance, so he can stop Code, kill Enlil, and destroy Babylon.

INTRUSION

Hmm. Well, I don't like trolling either, but should HE really be cracking down on it to such an extent? That might be overstepping a bit. But maybe he just says those things to get them to stop.

Okay, so about the "Hundredth Monkey Effect". I looked it up when the term came up before, but didn't write anything because the glossary doesn't actually explain what it's supposed to be, only that in this fictional world, it's somehow become accepted in the future. The thing is, as far as I can tell, this is nothing more than pseudoscience resulting from a misunderstanding of the relevant research. That research says nothing about a newly-learned behavior mysteriously jumping to individuals who should have no direct communication with each other (such as monkeys living on different islands). How anyone concluded this by reading the paper is beyond me.

Here's the paper.

HE finds himself attacking Code. He fights his way through, trying to find Enlil. But he finds someone unexpected at the end.

INTRUSION

Hmm. So, it appears HE frees both Magdalene and Eques from their Crystals at this point. I'm trying to relate it to route C. I guess it's just before "-Covenant-", where Yumi frees Eques by opening a door. In that scene, Eques materializes when she calls for him, but only after she opens it. What exactly does this mean?

Another long stretch of detailed (mostly) firefights. Again, not much for me to comment on.

Hi-bye, Ningirsu. Really good attempt, but this is HE, after all (even if it might not be the same one from the legends, or something).

Wait, two fairies? Are they both manifestations of LEM, or something else? Interesting. I had thought they were "physically" one and the same.

RIP, Sin. Not the true Sin, though. (But hang on a second. I thought Enlil cut him down at the end of route B. How is he still alive, unless it's a different Sin. Or a Null, I guess.)

I'm finally getting this up. Not managing to do one a day, it seems. Oh well, I'll just do what I can.

Route D—Session 16, part 1: Gun and Sword

Ishtar tries to stop HE from going (back?) to fight Enlil, but the two LEMs stop her. Ea makes him promise not to destroy Babylon. Finally, the fight begins. Even with his gun against her sword, Enlil is a tough foe. Will he best her? And if he does, will he go all the way and execute his revenge, or...?

ACTION

Those fairies are surprisingly strong for their size.

WAR TO THE KNIFE

Apparently, Enlil has small rocket engines in her body! That's some serious hardware! Where does she keep the fuel, though?

After the credits

The word "I" is colored again, though I didn't notice it quite yet. A few minutes later, I finally figured out the meaning. The color has some correspondence to the colors of the routes. So, here, for example, it's green at first, so he's thinking/speaking as HE. When Ishtar calls out to him about Mutsuki, he becomes confused. "The one I... no, I was trying to save was my sister?" Hinata came through briefly, I guess.

Regarding the route C/route D illustration, I naturally had a look at the code in the background. Some of it looks like garbage. I also see what looks like filenames. On the right-hand side, though, is some XML code. Specifically, it seems to be a Borland C++ project file (BPR).

Ah, so "those two" Magdalene was referring to were Hinata and HE.

Route E CG

Well, I guess we have all four protagonists here. In the background is HE and Yumi!Ishtar, while in the foreground we have Hinata and Akari!Ishtar. I think. Yumi is the one who always has those glasses on her head (does she ever put them in front of her eyes, I wonder?).

BTW, it seems there's a bit of trouble with part 3. It got a Content ID match for... get this... the klaxon sound effect (the one that sounds a bit like an air raid siren)! By "COLUMBIA"; not sure if that's the real Columbia Music Entertainment, or what, but the title given is in Japanese ("空襲警報サイレン - 効果音"). I guess they own the sound of an alarm. Seriously, though, it's blocked in the United States, and only the United States (EDIT: oh, now Australia and New Zealand have been added), which is weird considering the title is Japanese. Anyway, I'm considering how I should deal with it.

Route A/B—Session 16, part 2: Fragments 4

Picking up fragments in routes A and B. Hinata is tormented by images of Mutsuki in her pod, and a new glimpse of the future. Criminal sees hints of HE's involvement in fighting the terrorist attacks. Ishtar notices more about LEM, and later consoles another of her friends.

Notes:

Hinata getting even more glimpses of the future. This time, of Mutsuki in the pod.

something secretive and fun (3)

power to live (2)

More glimpses, and now he's asking why Mutsuki left.

to a smiling girl (2)

What's this? Another future flash (as we might call them). But this time, something else we haven't seen yet. HE fighting... whoever this is...

I have no idea. I don't remember seeing anyone dressed like that. What I can see, though, is this appears to be definitely within cyberspace. Over HE's shoulder, on the far left, is the symbol of Ashur. (I'm glad I looked that up before.) So, is this something that's supposed to be happening within the Ashur scenario in Babylon?

target (3)

Terrorists found dead by the police, shot with a high caliber pistol. That quickly made me think of HE. Yumi also thinks HE is involved. I'd say the likelihood is quite high.

"Well, terrorist acts don't exactly pose an imminent threat to us...", she says. How ironic.

scan (2)

Here's the scene where Ishtar was on her way to see Nergal, and catches Sin dealing drugs. This time, we're shown the DlroW/LEM logo, and Ishtar compares it to the fairy she saw. Not sure why this shows up only now.

Route B—Session 16, part 3: Summoning HE

Finishing the story of Sakuya's rescue. Nabu reveals a secret passage to the building's roof. But things turn bad as Code corners them. As a last resort, Yumi calls upon HE to save them all. With the network being jammed, her calls won't go through. Will they find a way out of their desperate situation? Also, a little music listening.

Notes:

Spoiler: click to toggle
blue-screen

"Some sort of hole you'd expect to emit gas." Only after having seen the whole ending can we realize this little detail is foreshadowing. Code tried to use those on HE in route D, but it had no chance.

I notice, when Mitsuhiko gets killed, Sakuya calls him "oji-sama". "Oji" literally means "uncle", although the person doesn't have to be a literal uncle, just like how children sometimes refer to a stranger as "onii-chan", "onee-chan", or some variation thereof. It's probably just the relationship these two have, but it's worth pointing out, at least.

Well, now we're pretty sure Hinata inherits the Moon's Age from his father. Presumably, one of Sakuya, Nabu, or Yumi gives it to him.

"Within this rosary lies all knowledge of network engineering known to man." Ummm... okay. And how is that knowledge accessed? If Ishtar could access it herself, wouldn't she be at least as powerful as HE? What of Ereshkigal? And Yumi? Well, apparently it only works with the key (is that a physical object?).

What is this? Why did HE do this? Unless this is some form of predestination paradox?

Another thing that's bugging me about this whole event. When Enlil encounters Mika earlier, she kills her, but spares Kosuke, not to mention the other members of Criminal. Yet later on, Code almost kills all of them. It's hard to see the logic in all of this, unless it's similar to HE's actions.

I dealt with the Content ID problem with a brief audio edit. It's not great sounding, but it still sounds better than the song removal thing that YouTube offers, which takes ages to finish and pretty well ruins the sound. :X
